Every year, cordless tools take up the majority of space in the annual Pro Tool Innovation Awards program. Clearly, innovation runs deep when it comes to battery-powered tools. As battery technology continues to evolve and grow, manufacturers seek new and exciting ways to maximize both power and runtime. Cordless tools are replacing more and more corded tools than ever before. Needless to say, we have a truly impressive list of PTIA 2019 Cordless Tools Awards winners this year.
Winner – Cordless Band Saw
DeWalt 20V MAX XR Dual Switch Band Saw DCS376P2

What we say:
DeWalt dials up the safety with their Dual Switch brushless band saw. All too often, it’s tempting to cut one-handed or make an adjustment on the fly and that’s when injuries tend to occur. By ensuring you have both hands on the saw during operation, the DCS376 is used the way it’s designed—with two hands and full control.

Winner – Mag Drills
Milwaukee 2787-22 M18 FUEL 1-1/2″ Magnetic Drill
For years, this market has been shifting to more compact magnetic drills, but no one has been able to deliver a solution for the user who has limited access to power, drills vertically or overhead, and regularly encounters thin metal. By utilizing M18 FUEL technology, Milwaukee addresses these issues by delivering the performance and run-time expected from most corded magnetic drill users. They also do this while eliminating the cord and maximizing productivity.
What we say:
The Milwaukee M18 Fuel Magnetic Drill Press is one of those tools that remind me of just how far lithium-ion technology has come. The fact that you can drill forty 13/16″ holes in steel on one battery charge (more with the 9.0Ah or 12.0Ah batteries) is impressive enough to stand on its own. However, additional features make it even better—like a permanent magnetic base that doesn’t lose holding power no matter the charge status. Or how about quick-change Weldon chucks that make this the portable magnetic drill you want to have above and beyond the fact that it’s cordless.

Winner – Cordless Stud/Joist Drills
Makita 18V X2 LXT Lithium‑Ion (36V) Brushless 1/2″ Right Angle Drill (XAD03)
The 18V X2 LXT (36V) Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless ½” Right Angle Drill (XAD03) is powered by two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Batteries for maximum performance, providing maximum power, speed and run time without the hassles of a cord. It has an electronically-controlled BL Brushless motor that matches torque and RPM to the changing demands of the application. The XAD03 will take on the most demanding applications like drilling up to 6-1/4” holes with hole saws and 4-5/8” holes with self-feed bits.
The XAD03 has a long list of features for drilling with superior speed and efficiency. The Makita BL Brushless Motor combined with X2 LXT technology delivers no-load drilling speeds of 0-350 RPM and 0-1,400 RPM. Under load, the Automatic Speed Change technology adjusts drill speed and torque during drilling for optimum performance. Added features include an electric brake for maximum productivity and a built-in clutch that reduces gear damage by disengaging gears if the bit binds (low speed only). When using two 18V 5.0Ah batteries and a self-feed bit, the XAD03 will deliver up to 160 2-9/16″ holes per charge in 2x SPF.
What we say:
Makita’s XAD03 is a powerful right angle drill that electricians and plumbers can rely on for installs. It has a ton of runtime that’s more than a match for its 45-minute charge cycle. With 4 batteries, the only time you’ll have to stop is for lunch and when the boss makes you go home.
When the holes get tougher and you have to gear it down to low speed, a safety clutch comes with you, reducing your risk of injury from bind ups. Against its professional competition, Makita’s kit price offers an excellent value to seal the deal.

Winner – Cordless Grinders
Bosch X-LOCK GWX18V-50PCN 18V Small Angle Grinder w/ Paddle Switch
What they said:
The Bosch X-Lock innovation provides three major advancements: 1) A better fit between the tool and the wheel, 2) An enhanced amount of power transfer from tool to the accessory, and 3) An easier accessory-change method.
With X-Lock, spanner wrenches are now a thing of the past. The standard grinder blade/wheel-change system involves a spanner wrench and flange nut. The X-Lock mount offers a wheel change that’s up to five times faster than conventional interfaces. There’s an audible snap when mounting an X-LOCK wheel on an X-LOCK grinder. The wheel mounts properly without the need for a spanner or flange nuts. Similarly, a single red lever assists in wheel ejection without the need for a spanner wrench.
The tool is also equipped with a convenience brake that helps stop the wheel from spinning in less than two seconds when the switch is turned off. With a robust and Bosch-proven ergonomic design, X-Lock grinders are ideal for metal fabrication and concrete/masonry applications. The X-Lock innovation drives productivity by cutting downtime between wheel changes with zero losable parts and single-lever wheel ejection without the need for a spanner wrench. The system truly makes spanner wrenches a thing of the past.
What we say:
Bosch has a history of massive innovation when it comes to connections—just look at Starlock on the oscillating multi-tool side. Bosch X-Lock makes another tremendous leap forward as a tool-free way to release and install grinder wheels. The mechanism gives you an audible “snap” when it locks in place and a simple button-push is all it takes to release it. The unique shape of the interface ensures that it holds just as well or better than a standard wrenched-down flange.

Winner – Cordless Impact Wrenches
Milwaukee 2867-22 M18 FUEL 1” High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY
The M18 FUEL 1” High Torque Impact Wrench is the epitome of what we’re able to accomplish through M18 FUEL cordless technology – it’s not only the first of its kind but it’s also the most powerful cordless impact in the world. This tremendous power breaks down so many barriers on the jobsite and in the shop: Users will no longer need their compressors and generators, nor will they need to spend the time and money needed to maintain them. They’ll experience much less fatigue because this tool is much lighter than what they have been using during these fastening applications. And they’ll be able to perform their jobs without the interference of cords or hoses. There simply hasn’t been a cordless impact wrench like this ever before.
What we say:
Go back even a year or two ago and no-one in our circles was thinking about fastening 1-3/4″ bolts with a cordless 1″ impact wrench, much less one with an 18V battery. But Milwaukee continues to push beyond boundaries and pulls it off in a package that’s a full 7 pounds lighter than leading corded options.
While the power is impressive, it’s not the entire story. Milwaukee also packs in One-Key, giving you tool tracking, inventory management, and customizable controls to work with. Among the more relevant features is a One-Key control with the ability to dial in repeatable torque to supplement the impact wrench’s 4-mode Drive Control system.

DeWalt DCF894 20V MAX 1/2” Mid-Range Impact Wrench
Winner – Cordless 12V Impact Wrenches
Milwaukee M12 FUEL Stubby Impact Wrenches
During applications that allow limited access, many professionals have resorted to reaching for pneumatic stubby impacts. However, the limited portability, maintenance, and noise associated with pneumatic units has been a frustration for these users. Cordless power is perfect for car cleaning, job site debris or anywhere that’s away from an outlet. Its performance rivals its 9-gallon corded counterpart, and with the option to use 2 batteries, you can effectively double the runtime you’d expect from other cordless wet/dry vacs. Its full-sized design lets you run continuously without having to stop and empty frequently.
– Full-size Cordless Wet/Dry
– Runs using one or two RIDGID 18-V Batteries sold at Home Depot
– Pickup power comparable to its corded counterpart
– Backed by the RIDGID Lifetime Warranty
What we say:
The Emerson side of Ridgid handles vacuums and they’re teaming up with the power tool side to bring us a cordless full-size wet/dry vacuum that’s sure to inspire envy (and a run to The Home Depot) from your friends. At 82 CFM, it rivals other cordless wet/dry vacs but has two distinct advantages.
First, it has a much larger capacity at 9 gallons. Whether you have a big mess to clean up or just want to dump it less frequently, it’s a win. It also has the ability to run on one or two Ridgid 18V batteries—the same ones that run Ridgid’s suite of power tools. You can slap in a compact battery for a quick cleanup or a pair of 9.0 Octane packs when your project gets a little more out of control.
