2023 Workwear and Safety Awards Winners

Of all the categories we judge, the 2023 Workwear and Safety Awards might be our favorite. We love good quality boots, gloves, jackets, and pants. More recently, however, we also tend to find additional articles of clothing and apparel, like hoodies, and hard hats. What’s more—gloves now include cut-resistant coatings and materials as well as features that make them more compatible with smartphones and tablets.

Because of silicon dust requirements and the importance of good lighting, work lights and vacuums also reside in this category. To say we’ve seen innovations abound in these categories would be a huge understatement! The 2023 Workwear and Safety Awards may not garner the media coverage of the latest power tools, but in many cases you simply can’t work without these products.

What they said:

Our hole covers are safe, efficient and affordable. Stay OSHA compliant in seconds with CoveMe’s 2″-6″ inch, wedge, adjustable, load-bearing, reusable hole covers. Winner – Personal Lighting

Milwaukee Tool Intrinsically Safe C I, II, III / D 1 Spot/Flood Headlamp 2004HZL

What they said:

The leading jobsite lighting provider in the industry, Milwaukee Tool, continues to expand their rapidly-growing headlamp offering with a new solution for hazardous location personal lighting. The Milwaukee® Intrinsically Safe C I, II, III / D 1 Spot/Flood Headlamp sets a new standard for this type of critical jobsite lighting by delivering greater visibility and higher light output without compromise on overall size and weight.

“Intrinsically safe lighting is a requirement for companies that do any work in dimly-lit, flammable gas and dust situations.* Unfortunately, up until now, safety managers have had to opt for intrinsically safe headlamps that compromise on performance due to the limited capabilities of other products in the market,” said Jason Isaacs, Group Product Manager for Milwaukee Tool. “By leveraging our leadership in jobsite lighting technology, we’re able to finally provide these users with a hazardous location headlamp built for their needs. This new Class I, II, and III / Division 1 Groups A-G headlamp not only delivers 310 lumens of TRUEVIEW™ High Definition Output and a beam distance of 100 meters, but it does so in a lightweight compact design.”

Milwaukee’s new headlamp is powered by 3 AAA batteries, delivering up to 40 hours of run-time. With 5 output modes to manage brightness, beam pattern, and run-time, its output can also be directed with the pivoting light head in seven adjustable positions. This headlamp is IP64 rated for dustproof and water-resistant. To increase visibility and awareness of the wearer, the headlamp is designed with a hi-visibility color and a combination of on-strap and on-tool identifications. These features are lacking on all other hazardous location headlamps previously available in the market. The headlamp also includes two straps so wearers can adapt it for their specific needs and comfort: a rubber strap for hard hat use and a nylon strap for bare head use. Additionally, users who wish to attach the light directly to their hard hat can do so with the included Dual Lock™ adhesive strip.

What we say:

There are a couple of reasons Milwaukee’s Intrinsically Safe Headlamp outshines the competition. It’s clearly marked as intrinsically safe and distinct in its color design from any of Milwaukee’s other headlamps. When you pick it up, you know without a doubt it’s your intrinsically safe headlamp rather than a standard one. That’s not something every manufacturer of intrinsically safe lighting does, and it’s really helpful when you’re working in hazardous locations. It also doesn’t compromise on performance to deliver capabilities like a brighter 100-meter beam distance and lighter weight.

Winner – Tethering & Fall Protection

Guardian B7-Comfort Harness

What they said:

The B7-Comfort Harness, Guardian’s newest innovation bringing precision adjustment, premium comfort.

Through user insights Guardian was able to understand one of the bigger areas needing innovation was comfort, which we quantified as adjustability and mobility. It was these insights that led to an innovative design with four patents pending around adjustment and mobility.

The B7-Comfort features industry-exclusive, patent-pending adjustable padding on both the shoulders and waist. This feature allows the users to truly tailor the fit of their harness. The adjustable waist pad also lends to the harness’ Adjustable Tool Bag Attachment System, which can securely fit tool bags between 4”-10”.

The B7-Comfort also features the patent-pending DiaLock Torso Adjusters, a quick, easy and precise method of harness adjustment. The DaiLock Torso Adjusters are the most refined adjuster in its class and features a unique dual-locking mechanism that mitigates webbing creep, to ensure your perfect fit stays all day.

The B7-Comfort is one of the most mobile harness on the market, due to Guardian’s unique and innovative Three-Six-O Chassis. The Three-Six-O chassis design features an integrated O-Ring. This connects the torso and sub-pelvic, while allowing each to move independently of each other for complete, unrestricted 360-degree movement. This design also incorporates a robust 3” sub-pelvic strap for added support and comfort when in work positioning. And lastly, due to the design, the leg straps are not oriented to ride up into uncomfortable areas, sitting comfortably around the user’s thigh.

The harness also features The EZ D-Ring provides an ideal solution for fall arrest tie off. The EZ D-Ring is an expertly designed stand-up Dorsal D, that is always within reach. The EZ D-Ring comes integrated with a patent-pending SRL adapter slot, that keeps your SRLs high and tight on the body, dispersing weight properly and mitigating sag found on other adapter styles.

The B7-Comfort has also put a focus on post-fall and emergency innovations as well.

The B7-Comfort features industry-exclusive and patent-pending integrated trauma straps in the leg pads. This offers a quick, easy and reliable option to help mitigate the effects of suspension trauma, which can be caused by not only restrictions on critical arteries, but also a lack of movement allowing blood to pump and flow properly.

Another way the B7-Comfort is transforming rescue is its inclusion of safety technology. Guardian has partnered with twICEme technologies to offer the first and only harness in the United States that integrates its innovate twICEme Safety technology. twICEme is an integrated technology that allows end-users to enter personal and medical data into a piece of equipment. In the event the person is incapacitated due to a medical or traumatic event, bystanders and first responders can access this data via Near Field Communication (NFC) with a smartphone. Access to this safety information will give first responders a clear, efficient way to make decisions in the case of an emergency where time is often most critical. It can also be helpful to co-workers if something happens to their colleague on site.

What we say:

One of the temptations to compromise on fall protection is the discomfort that comes from wearing a harness. Guardian is specifically going after that pain point with their B7-Comfort harness. It’s more than just adding padding though, it’s a combination of that plus adjustability and movement that not only makes the harness comfortable to wear, but also ensures that you’re able to maintain mobility, so your entire body remains comfortable while you work. When you’re more comfortable, you’re more productive, and that’s worth its weight in gold.

Winner – Hard Hats

STUDSON Full-Brim ANSI Type II Safety Helmet SHK-1

What they said:

The SHK-1 Full-Brim ANSI Type II Safety Helmet represents the first of its kind in the safety helmet category. It is the only full-brim safety helmet that complies with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z89.1 Type I and II safety standards, meaning it is designed to reduce force as a result of impacts to the front, back, sides, and the top of the head, while also offering greater protection from the sun and rain.

Traditional hard hat systems, ANSI Z89.1 Type I hard hats, are only designed to protect against falling objects, leaving a significant safety gap that STUDSON addresses. In response, the SHK-1 Full-Brim ANSI Type II safety helmet is designed to prevent traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), featuring technologies to absorb impacts from fall-related injuries on any job site.

Inside, the SHK-1 Full-Brim safety helmet includes Koroyd welded tube polymer for absorbing impact. The Koroyd material also improves heat dissipation and venting via its cellular-structure design in comparison to traditional EPS foam, which helps combat heat stress. The embedded twICEme technology digitally integrates a wearer’s vital health data within the helmet. In the event of an emergency, that data is accessible via a smartphone NFC chip reader viewable through an SMS text message or the twICEme app for iOS or Android devices.

Weighing just 495 grams despite the extra protection, the safety helmet is also lightweight and breathable for enhanced comfort – enough to wear throughout the entire workday, every day. In the back, it features an adjustable rear-dial system allowing for even finer fitting height- or width-wise. To keep it on the head, the safety helmet features a magnetic on/off buckling system and four-point strap for quick adjustments with a single hand while wearing a glove.

What we say:

Studson made waves with the first full-brim safety helmet to satisfy Type and Type 2 requirements. It’s an expansion of the original SHK-1 helmets, which were already impressive in their own right. Koroyd welded tubes crumple to absorb the force of an impact and Studson’s Brainshield helmet pad system helps reduce the risk of concussions from angles or oblique impacts.

Something that you won’t see on most hard hats but is included is Studson’s twICEme feature—an integrated NFC chip that stores important medical information and emergency contacts for emergency workers if you end up in an accident.

Winner – Safety Glasses

Bollé Safety Universal Goggle

What they said:

Bollé Safety is disrupting the industrial safety glass market with a new series of safety goggles that are color-coded and tailored for a wide range of use applications.

This new Universal Goggle collection adapts to a wide range of industrial uses. Each offering has a specific color strap making it more suited to a specific use, offering variations in ventilation, lens color, and material.

The Universal Goggle prevents external hazards, such as impacts, gases and liquids, radiation, and more, from entering a worker’s eyes by offering a customized fit, reducing the gap between the frame and the skin for optimal protection.

Variations Include:

1) Yellow – Offers indirect ventilation and is suitable for a majority of users including construction sites where impact is the primary hazard.
2) Green – Unlike the yellow goggle, this version is completely waterproof and suitable for professionals working with inflammable products, dangerous gases, and fine particles. Ideal uses may range from the petrochemical industry to the food industry.
3) Cool Grey  – This version is made with a neoprene strap, which is more chemical resistant than nylon. It is ideal for workers who are around solvents and acids.
4) Grey – This option is designed with welding lenses and is suitable for welders handling class 2 to 5 gasses.

In addition to the unique color-coding system, the Universal Goggle offers a wide range of additional proprietary features including a new form fitting innovation from Bollé Safety called The Wave technology. This is a first of its kind with an accordion-style bellows system that allows the goggle to conform to a user’s face and evenly distribute the goggle’s pressure across the face ensuring an optimized fit for each individual. The Universal Goggle is also compatible with a face shield designed to protect the lower part of the face. This face shield clips easily and intuitively onto the Universal Goggle.

Features include:

  • Bi-material frame made with TPR1 for greater flexibility and comfort, and PC2 for better impact resistance and optical clarity.
  • Level B impact resistance (the highest level of resistance for goggles) according to EN1663A panoramic vision that helps limit blind spots with a polycarbonate lens.
  • Bollé Safety’s PLATINUM coating that protects goggles against scratches and slows down fogging.
  • A product that is compatible with prescription glasses: slots on the goggle allow most prescription glasses to fit perfectly under the goggle without creating any pressure points.

In keeping with the brands ESG commitment, the Universal Goggle can be easily dismantled allowing materials (TRP, PC and Nylon) to be recycled separately and is packaged in a high-density polyethylene bag that is 100 percent recycled and recyclable. This model is also compatible with a face shield that aims to protect the lower part of the face.

What we say:

There are times when standard safety glasses aren’t enough and that’s where goggles step in. They can be a pain to find the right fit, though, and they’re often uncomfortable. Bollé’ solves those problems with their Universal Goggle. Using a bellows-style system, you get a correct fit against your face that’s also more comfortable to wear. Taking it up a notch, color coding helps you easily identify which goggles you need for the job you’re approaching. Plus, the Bollé team designed them to easily dismantle, making the recyclable components more accessible once their service life is done and lowering the overall carbon footprint.

Winner – Work Pants/Shorts

TRUEWERK THE XP WERKPANT

What they said:

The XP WerkPant is TRUEWERK’s most technical work pant yet, brand new for 2023, and designed to outperform anything else on the market. Conceived as a mechanic’s pant for warmer conditions or work inside a garage, the 4-way stretch fabric is slightly lighter and more air permeable than the famous T2 WerkPant, and an interior wicking treatment helps spread sweat fast and evaporate it off your body.

Unlike traditional cotton or “duck canvas” work pants, TRUEWERK’s double-woven softshell fabric has four-way stretch for unrestricted mobility and soft “”float yarns” next-to-skin specially developed for all-day cooling comfort. An extended elastic waistband provides a secure fit and articulated legs allow for a full range of mobility where it counts.

After consulting with several high-performing heavy equipment mechanics, TRUEWERK created a fabric built to withstand the extra-high temperatures of industrial laundering and will not fade in the wash. The feature set has been completely rethought to tackle the widest range of possible jobs, including knee protection in the form of removable knee pads that are flexible, lightweight, low-bulk, and air permeable to reduce heat retention. The XP WERKPANT also includes TRUEWERK’s standard pencil slot on the right and a general utility cargo pocket on the left thigh to carry fasteners, hand tools parts, or towels to better hide dirt, grime, and stains.

With integrated work-specific features, a medium-weight, cooler fabric, a flexible fit, and the availability of darker colors to better hide dirt, grime, and stains, XP WerkPant is engineered for the future of tough jobs. TRUEWERK’s first-ever wrench-and-grease specific pant, the XP WerkPant is an exciting, innovative, and first-of-its-kind product designed to meet the needs of modern mechanics and bring shop pants into the 21st century.

What we say:

If you’re a fan of the T1 WerkPant (who isn’t?), then you’ll love the Truewerk XP WerkPant for those days that your knees are in contact with the ground or against equipment you’re working on. With built-in knee pads that retain the movement and flexibility Truewerk is known for, it’s an excellent upgrade to keep the T1’s primary characteristics while saying goodbye and good riddance to your strap-on knee pads.
